How to Make Your Kitchen Cabinets Functional

by Elias Deukmajian | Kitchen Remodel

Are you like many families throughout the country who struggle with the problem of a cluttered kitchen? This is a very common issue for many families who like to be together in this room but suffer from too small of a kitchen space. Let’s look at some ways to utilize your kitchen area to the best of its abilities.

Leave No Space Unused

The easiest way to maximize your cabinet space is to utilize every wall, nook, and cranny that it offers. If you find ways to take advantage of hidden corners that often lay dormant or wall space that could easily handle more shelves, you will soon find that more space opens up.

This practice takes a willingness to move a pot to get to a pan or stacking your plates and bowls several rows deep. It only takes a few extra seconds to move a few things around and replace them once you have the item you need.

Install Cabinets That Offer Door Storage

While you can build racks and add them to your existing cabinets, you may find it more beneficial to purchase a cabinet with this already in place. DIY isn’t for everyone, and the last thing you want is to damage the cabinets currently in your kitchen. There are also inserts that can help with creating spaces for certain items.

Strategic Stacking

Learning to stack like items together is extremely important to utilizing space. Making a practice of carefully and strategically stacking your plates together, your cups together, and your bowls from large to small will go a long way to maximizing your cabinet space. The same can be done for pots, pans, lids, and storage containers.

Have the Proper Item in the Right Cabinet

If you want to maximize your cabinet space, you don’t want to start mixing your spices with your dishes or vice versa. The quickest way to run out of cabinet space is by putting the wrong item in the wrong place. Utilize your cabinets by putting spices close to the stovetop and oven. The storage containers should be on countertops by the dishwasher and/or sink where you can store them after they are clean.

Utilize Baskets and Bins

You might be saying to yourself, “Won’t baskets and bins take up more space?” You may be pleasantly surprised that when baskets and bins are utilized correctly, they are a huge space saver. These containers are best used for smaller items like snacks, small containers, ramekins, twist ties, odds and ends, and even Ziplock baggies in your pantry.

Dividers and Trays Save Space for Days

Much like their close relatives (baskets and bins), dividers and trays are essential when it comes to keeping your cabinet items in groups and from falling all over each other. Divider trays are best used when storing cooking utensils and smaller items such as straws and silverware.

Introducing: The Lazy Susan

Don’t let the name fool you. No cabinet works harder at maximizing your space than the lazy susan. These flat surfaces on a turntable are best used in a corner spot. It features a revolving tray that makes it easy and convenient to reach items in the back corners of your cabinet that would typically go forgotten and unused. The best practice would be to find a lazy susan at your local cabinet specialist to ensure you get a well-functioning space saver.

Built-Ins are Better

This may be one of the more expensive suggestions on this list, but it’s also one of the best if you want to maximize your cabinet space. Built in cabinets allow all the room of a normal shelving unit but allow you more floor space since they are flush with the walls.
